What Holistic Economics Means to Me

After more than two years of launching Stemma Analytics, I recently felt the need to pause and reflect on the philosophy I had conceived for my work: Holistic Economics.

We all know what economics means, but holistic can feel less tangible. When I was shaping the idea for the firm, I envisioned an approach that went beyond traditional economics. I've always looked past the numbers in public datasets and financial statements, aware of how data can be cherry-picked to support a narrative or stripped of the nuance needed to understand what was really happening.

But my ethos was never just about correcting these distortions. I wanted to tell richer, more layered stories, ones that reflect the dynamics and human realities behind the numbers.

Like many entrepreneurs, my first few years included work that didn’t always fully align with this vision. Yet that work was still meaningful: it helped build my business, and it pushed me to clarify what I value. This past summer, I gave myself the space to step back and ask: What does holistic economics really mean to me?

That reflection was grounding and it helped me see that I’ve been steadily building this philosophy all along.

At Stemma Analytics, holistic economics means developing economic models that go beyond surface-level metrics. It’s about understanding the full system, not just numbers, but also the people, communities, policies, and structures that shape them.

It brings together quantitative data and qualitative insight, including statistics, lived experiences, institutional contexts, and social dynamics, to build a more complete and realistic picture.

We believe this approach matters because our clients and partners deserve to see the whole landscape, not just their financial results, but also their ripple effects on communities and how external forces are shaping their organizations.
